Throughout my life, nature has always been a portal into God’s presence. As a child, I spent most weekends in the woods behind my family home. While I did not know it at the time, by plucking wild honeysuckle, immersing my feet in small brooks, and sunbathing on smooth rocks, I was inching towards faith. When I first read Romans 1:20, I gasped in conviction. My passion and love for nature has only increased as my faith in Christ has deepened and matured.
It would surprise none of my friends to learn that Chipotle’s new short film moved me to tears. Their stunningly executed piece is advertising at its manipulative best. As singer Fiona Apple croons the refrain from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, “Want to change the world? There’s nothing to it?” we see a traumatized cow trapped in a milking/torture chamber. When Apple repeats the refrain, the protagonist scarecrow is chopping his home grown ingredients in a missional effort to combat the evil agri-food business.
The hauntingly beautiful infomercial animates our worst fears; the food industry has gone mad, trapping us, along with bovine #53281, in a broken system. But the admittedly less than holistic food industry is only one of many capitalist enterprises which have degraded and damaged the earth.

Loved the piece! cCould only read your openning paragraphs on your blog but I see where the editor’s change of a few words sanitized your thoughts. Taking out the reference to the commercial’s “manipulative” quality.
