“As Christians, we cannot afford to be indifferent, nor are we allowed to acquiesce to mediocrity…. The result of such faith is not a life of indifference but a life that makes a difference. Because we serve such an extraordinary God, we are called to live in difference…. Others who do not believe should look at us and not only wonder why we are different, but also be led to crave being in that difference too.”  Carolyn Weber, Holy is the Day.

Trauma re-arranges our faith. Sometimes, those seismic shifts cause our golden idols to topple. And that’s a good–though disconcerting–thing. Weber’s soulquake was triggered by the birth of her twin sons. She writes, “Trauma cracks us open so the Holy Spirit can get in.” The remainder of the book invites us to walk with Weber as she begins the slow processes of integrating her beliefs into the landscape of her life.

Because she is a compelling writer, you will want to rush through this, but don’t. In a world that values speed and accomplishment, Weber’s book is a great reminder to slow down and find God in the mundane and often overlooked moments.
